Six State Voluntary Disaster Relief Meeting

Massachusetts Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster MA VOAD] leaders met with the VOAD organizations from the five other New England states in June to coordinate how each group can act together when a larger New England disaster hits any state in our region in the future.

VOADs consist of many non-profit organizations that you are already aware of, for the purpose of helping with the individual needs of people harmed by disasters such as hurricanes, floods tornadoes, earthquakes and more while state and federal agencies mainly concern themselves with our infrastructure that would include the power grid, flood barriers, power sources and roads.

The VOAD organizations regularly coordinate with state and federal emergency management before, during and after a bad event occurs. For more data on the Massachusetts VOAD and its members, visit www.massvoad.org .The attached photo are New England VOAD members who attended the June meeting.

Massachusetts Non-Profit Disaster Recovery Coalition Elects New Board

By Kevin Hall (Open Post) – February 4, 2016 6:16 pm ET

FRAMINGHAM – Yesterday, at a meeting of Massachusetts Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster [MA VOAD] at the Massachusetts Emergency Management bunker in Framingham, the coalition reorganized its board after one if its Co-chairs stepped down

VOADs were created in every state in 1969 following a situation that arose in 1969 when many non-profits rushed to Louisiana in an uncoordinated manner to help the victims of Hurricane Camille. Since then, the majority of non-profits assisting with disaster response have coordinated their actions as VOAD coalitions in coordination with local, state and federal emergency management.

Massachusetts Non-Profit Disaster Recovery Coalition Elects New Board

Massachusetts VOAD operates off an organization chart and has three board members which are Chairman, Vice-chair and Secretary. The Vice-chair runs the production divisions, Secretary is in charge of establishing and expanding the coalition and the Chairman oversees all activities. For the past year, there have been two Co-chairs who share the roles of the Chair and Vice-Chair.

Former Co-chair, Paul Leslie, of the Salvation Army stepped down recently as he was assigned to another position in the Salvation Army which has always been a disaster relief leading in the state. With that, Secretary Sara Hamilton of Boston Cares moved up to Co-chair from her Secretary Board position to join Larry Rosenberg of the American Red Cross as Co-chair. Kevin Hall of Church of Scientology Disaster Response moved back to the position of MA VOAD Secretary which he previously held for over two years. Hall will also remain with MA VOAD on his Public Relations Director position while holding Secretary unless another VOAD member would like to assume the role of Secretary and the coalition votes in favor of the position change.

The Board and its members feel that the coalition will remain strong in its ability to assist those in need during times of disaster as all three board members are very experienced.

WORCESTER – Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) held a conference today at the DCU Center entitled, “Effective Leadership During Crisis” and several government and private organizations, such as Massachusetts Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster (MA VOAD) attended.

The MEMA event covered information such as responding to terrorist attacks, how to teach the proper safety use of generators during winter storms, flood control, leadership skills during a time of crisis and much more.

VOADs, which operate in every state, consist of non-profits like the Red Cross, United Way, and many more local and regional organizations as can be seen by clicking here for Massachusetts and various local and national religious groups ranging from Christians (such as the Salvation Army, Catholics, Baptists and Methodists), Scientologists, Muslims, Buddhists, etc.

While emergency management mainly deals with getting the infrastructure back together, the VOADs coordinate among its member groups to give assistance to individuals in need of help wherever possible. Massachusetts VOAD has been very active over the past few years helping victims of tornadoes in Western, MA and Revere, a couple of hurricanes and also helped to feed and calm people during the Boston Marathon attack.

Successful MA VOAD Summit Enhances Disaster Recovery

CANTON — Approximately sixty non-profit, government and private disaster recovery experts from across Massachusetts and other areas of New England met at the Salvation Army’s Canton, MA headquarters on October 30th for a Massachusetts Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster full day summit.

The summit consisted of opening and closing presentations along with four break out sessions. The opening speech was an enlightening review by Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency Public Affairs Director, Peter Judge, of how a large flood with great damage was handled in a very rural area of Alaska where there were no roads to bring in emergency help  The closing remarks came from Aaron Titus of Crisis CleanUp which covered how to ensure that all calls for help are properly organized so that none fall through the cracks.

The break out sessions covered the recent disaster recovery scenarios as well as best practices in the following areas of helping with disaster:

1. Long Term Recovery
2. Donations Management
3. Spiritual/Emotion Care
4. Large Event (major catastrophes) Response

The participants had the opportunity to participate in all four sessions that ran throughout the day.

Below is a photo of MA VOAD Chair, Steve Napoli (Red Cross) addressing the audience in a Large Event break out session.
